In central Iowa, a small town became synonymous with mystery in the summer of 1912. On the evening of June 9, 1912, as small farmhouse on East 3 Street in Villisca, Iowa was the scene of one of the most brutal, and still unsolved, murderers in the history of the United States. After returning home from a church function, 6 members of the Moore family, plus two over night guests were bludgeoned to death with an ax. An unknown assailant, with pre-planned murderous intent, hid in the attic with an ax, and when the Moore family and their guests went to sleep the he slipped from the attic and struck each person in the face with the ax. When the sun rose on the morning of June 10th, neighbors discovered Josiah Moore (43), Sara Moore (40), Hermine Moore (11), Katherine Moore (9), Boyd Moore (7) and Paul Moore (5), along with Lena Stillinger (12) and Ina Stillinger (8 ) dead and mutilated beyond recognition. Due to the horror that occurred in the house in 1912, the Villisca Axe Murder House is considered to be one of the most haunted location in the United States. The investigators of Soul Sisters Paranormal traveled to Villisca to conduct our own investigation. During the investigation, we all felt that the house had a genuine “creepy” vibe; almost like we were being watched by the walls. We had stationary equipment set up throughout the house, and during the night we caught several EVPs that we cannot explain. For example, during one EVP session, Cara asked if we were being followed; the voice recorder captured an affirmative response (Clip #1). Also during the night, the voice recorder in the attic captured the voice of a man saying, what we believe is, “downstairs where the, uh, girls were sleepin’” (Clip #2). This is interesting phrasing to us, because Lena and Ina Stillinger were sleeping in the downstairs bedroom when they were killed. Another interesting EVP (Clip #3) was captured in the children’s room, and is seems to be a child saying “I can see the bad men”. Again, this is interesting phrasing to us because we believe it says “men” rather than “man”. Our night at the Villisca Axe Murder House certainly lived up to our expectations of a “haunted house”.
